The Power of Sharing Love & Truth

(Lake Siskiyou reflecting our beloved Mt. Shasta a few mornings ago)

As a licensed therapist for over 45 years, I’ve had the privilege of gently guiding hundreds of individuals and couples into profound levels of heartfelt healing and intimacy that they ever knew existed. I am blessed to do this work…

Throughout all these years, I’ve continually witnessed a central variable which powerfully contributes to flourishing relationships and deeply fulfilling lives:

  • When full transparency becomes a consistently lived practice in our lives, something fundamental and profound comes alive in us

With this core variable awake and aglow, our relationship with ourself and others no longer revolves around managing appearances, avoiding discomfort, defending ourselves, or protecting old wounds.

When we engage life with transparency, we open to new depths of aliveness in the present moment, gift ourselves with access to revelations about our inner and outer worlds, and strengthen our capacity for sharing soul-nourishing intimacy with those around us.

Here’s why cultivating transparency opens us up to exquisite gifts:

  • Transparency invites and anchors emotional safety. When you no longer have to hide parts of yourself, your nervous system relaxes. You are not constantly monitoring how you are being perceived or wondering whether something essential about you is too much or not enough. Being seen in all your splendor—and all your messy humanity just as it is—creates a felt sense of belonging that performance can never accomplish.

  • Transparency reduces unnecessary conflict. Much of what creates tension in a relationship—with ourself and with others—is not what is spoken, but what is withheld. Unnamed fears, unexpressed needs, and unacknowledged resentment quietly and steadily erode connection. When we connect with and express our inner experience—responsibly and as close to real time as possible—guessing diminishes, misunderstanding loses its grip, and intimacy is nourished.

  • Transparency deepens trust. Not because everything is perfect or easy, but because reality is being honored. Trust grows as we allow ourselves and our partners to know what is happening beneath the surface that is neither hidden nor managed. Over time, this skill of openness creates a field of relationship that feels sturdy and resilient rather than fragile.

  • Transparency supports personal and relational growth. When authenticity is truly welcomed, old adaptations soften. Shame loses its power. Healing happens not through fixing, but through meeting ourself and our partner with presence and care. We open new levels of access to our intuition and its life-changing revelations as we cherish the liberation that naturally arises as we become more and more undefended.

  • A transparent relationship becomes stabilizing in an unstable world. Instead of being yet another place where our armor is required, relationship becomes a safe sanctuary—a place where you can return to yourself, be known accurately, and deepen in remembering who you are. From that place, life and love feels less effortful—and more soft and enduring.

Self-Intimacy and the Courage to Be Seen

Intimacy has often been referred to as, “into me see.”

If we long to open to new levels of transparency and intimacy with others, it’s essential to recognize that the depth and quality of our outer relationships is dependent upon on the levels of awareness, skill and maturity we’ve cultivated in our relationship with ourselves. Truly, this work begins at home.

Self-intimacy is the capability to meet our own fear, shame, and tenderness with honesty and compassion. Without this in place, transparency with another can feel too threatening as we’ll be tempted to look for love sourced only in the world. With a foundation of self-intimacy in place, transparency with a loving partner becomes more safe and exponentially nourishing.

“Couples therapy creates a healing space that strengthens each partner’s level of self-intimacy—which naturally invites soulful reconnection and a generous expression of love. As each partner continues cultivating a rich inner life, it brings a fuller, truer presence to the relationship.”

I discovered years ago that vulnerability is not weakness … it is actually a portal which provides us access to our depth, to our strength. It is the courage to remain connected with our flow of truth and love in the present moment. When transparency is met with humility, ego patterns soften, and intimacy deepens.

In my last post entitled, “Marrying the Divine & Human Within - Part 3,” I introduced a step-by-step process of facilitating a skill in one’s consciousness called Inner Dialogue. This empowering tool is one of the best ways to meet yourself in an intimate way—particularly at times when you are feeling upset, out of balance and in need of your own love and support.

I’d like to introduce you to another tool for turning inward and meeting yourself in a safe, honorable way. It is one of my most vibrant, reliable go-to practices for accessing a flow of truth and loving intimacy within myself in the present.

It is called, "River of Intimacy.” It involves consciously focusing upon and completing the following sentence: “I am in relationship with….” It is a moment-to-moment practice of repeating these words over and over, each time completing the sentence by naming the thing you are intimate with in that very moment.

This practice can be done out loud or inwardly. To illustrate, here’s an example of me entering into a flow through the River of Intimacy process:

“I am in relationship with my fingers and keyboard as I type these words;” then, “I am in relationship with you, the reader, as I imagine what you may experience when you read the words I’m crafting right now;” then, “I am in relationship with my doubts about whether or not I truly have anything of value to offer in these Substack articles;” then, “I am in relationship with Joy right now as I send her my prayers and love as she takes her yoga class;” etc.

The key is to simply complete the sentence by naming your present experience of relationship—with specifics—and then continually letting the experience go and proceeding to the next moment of your experience, the next arena of relationship that arises in your awareness. There is no need to grab onto any of your experiences or be tempted to create any stories about them.

The River of Intimacy is simply a process of continually giving yourself permission to be intimate and present with yourself and embrace all aspects of your experience—which by nature which by its nature is continually revealing and changing.

Practicing this process for 5-10 minutes, or even a couple of hours—I’ve even gifted myself by doing it for whole days—has the impact of steadily dropping you into your heart and steeping in your unfolding experience.

This deceptively simply spiritual practice has a way of naturally inviting you into enlivening, moment-to-moment river of intimacy in your being, and can be profoundly centering and revealing. I can’t encourage you enough to open to your sense of curiosity and wonder and experiment with this meditative tool. And, I’d love to hear from you about your experiences or any questions you may have.

In my next post, I will be taking a deep dive into the dynamic process of welcoming new levels of transparency and intimacy into your outer relationships. After all these decades of working with couples, along with my own journeys through the rich landscape of intimate relationships, it is an art and craft I know I great deal about. I’ll be passing along many new principles and tools that I hope you’ll find illuminating and imminently useful.

Until then, take great care of yourself, Gavin
